Humane society needs volunteers
The ongoing volcanic eruption and lava threat to the Puna residents, including Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens, continues to stress the community and its resources.
Hawaii Island Humane Society continues to assess and provide assistance to residents of Puna and their pets and animals, but needs additional volunteers at its shelter in Keaau.
If you are able and willing to assist, call the Keaau shelter at 966-5458 to put your name on the volunteer call list.
Connections PCS to provide lunches
Connections Public Charter School announces it will provide free lunches for public school students from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 12 through July 19 during its Studio Shaka Summer Program.
The meals will be available to program participants and to any public school students ages 18 and younger.
The Seamless Summer Option is a federal program that supports children with food service when the school system is out for the regular school year. Connections PCS is an equal opportunity provider.

Learn what’s new at HCC-Palamanui
Hawaii Community College-Palamanui and the University Center, West Hawaii at Palamanui have been up and running since August 2015. Since then, the campus has seen growth in enrollment and programs offered.
To find out more about campus happenings and updates, prospective students are invited to “talk story” sessions from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Carrie Kuwada Phipps, educational specialist for the University Center, will showcase new and current programs offered through the campus, which include certificates, noncredit offerings and associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
She also will discuss upcoming workshops and informational sessions and provide on-site help with the fall 2018 online application process. The deadline for the fall semester application is Aug. 1.

Celebrate obon
in the gardens
The community is invited to Obon in the Gardens from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 2 in the parking lot in front of Shoroan Tea House at Lili‘uokalani Gardens in Hilo.
The festivities will include crafts for children, food and refreshments and a performance by Taishoji Taiko.
There also will be matsuri dances and bon dance lessons for the first bon dance of the season.
The event is presented by Friends of Lili’uokalani Gardens.
