Waveriders reap Kaimana Awards
Kealakehe graduates Maya Kiana Gee and Hope Kudo were honored as Kaimana Award recipients Saturday in Honolulu, as presented by the Hawaii Medical Service Association.
According to a release, 16 recent graduates statewide received HMSA awards and each earned a $5,000 scholarship.
Gee served as a representative on the Hawaii State Board of Education and the Hawaii State Student Council executive board at Kealakehe High School, while participating in swimming, water polo, and cheerleading. She’s set to go to Middlebury College.
Kudo a four-year varsity member for her cross-country and tennis teams, and was also a two-year varsity member for track. She served as captain of Kealakehe’s International public policy forum and academic worldquest team. Kudo was also the two-year head delegate and captain for her Model United Nations team.
Kudo is primed to attend Harvard University.
The Kaimana school winners in the BIIF were Keaau High (large) and Parker School (small).
UH-Hilo hoops camp July 23-26
Registration forms are now available for the 2018 Vulcan Basketball Camp with coach Jimmy Yagi and Vulcan coaches GE Coleman and David Kaneshiro, held July 23-26 at the UHH gym and Panaewa gym.
The camp, a Hilo tradition for more than 40 years, is open to boys and girls basketball players ages 9-17. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. each day (depending on age group). Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt, a basketball, a team photo, and lunch each day.

Vul volleyball camps in July
Registration is now open for two UH-Hilo volleyball camps this summer, one at UHH and another in Waimea.
Vul coach Gene Krieger will host a camp in Waimea, July 23-25 at the Waimea District Park Gymnasium. The three-day sessions are open to players ages 7-17 for a total cost of $75. The teaching will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day with a break for lunch (bring your own), followed by afternoon play from 1-4 p.m.
The camps on campus will run in two different segments. The first, July 29-31, will be for high school players. Another three-day camp will run Aug. 1-3 for elementary and junior high school keiki. Both camps will run with the same 9 a.m. to noon, 1-4 p.m. schedule. The cost is $75.
Teaching includes 18 hours of instruction and play and a camp t-shirt. An additional option for overnight stay is available as well. For a total cost of $175, campers can stay two nights in the UHH dorms (shared room), which includes three lunches and two dinners.

Special Olympics golf season set
The Special Olympics East Hawaii golf season will begin June 15, with practices every Friday at Naniloa Golf Course in what is the program’s 11th season.
A golf tournament will be held Aug. 26th.
