Golfers triumph at Hualalai
Brian Overbeek hammered all three of his drives at least 200 yards, Kady Matsumoto was the best chipper and Kahaiolelo Helm was the steadiest with his putter June 16 during a qualifier at Hualalai.

In all, 16 golfers moved one step closer to have a chance to reach Augusta National by advancing to a Drive Chip & Putt Championship subregional, which will be held July 21 at Kapolei Golf Club on Oahu.
Overbeek scored 144 points in boys 14-15, Matsumoto finished with 141, including 60 in chipping to top girls 10-11, and Helm led boys 10-11, with 60 of his 101 points coming courtesy of his putter. The other age group winners were Aukahi Lapera (boys 12-13, 107), Blake Nakagawa (boys 7-9, 102), Isabella Rodriguez (girls 12-13, 112) and Malina Altergott (girls 7-9, 62).
Also advancing were Michael Lopez (boys 14-15), Eric Gee and Nathan Overbeek (boys 12-13), Lokuhao Lapera (boys 10-11), Jimmy Whaley and Victor Sanchez (boys 7-9), Mia Cepeda (girls 12-13) and Ava Cepeda and Zaynie Lee Chow (girls 10-11).
Ka’u Coffee Trail Run
The fifth annual Ka’u Coffee Trail Run will be held Sept. 22 offering 5K, 10K and half-marathon races through macadamia nut and coffee fields along the slopes of rural Ka’u.
The runs are sponsored by O Ka’u Kakou, and all profits benefit the Ka’u community, a release said.
The races begin and end at the Ka’u Coffee Mill in Pahala.
Early registration runs through July 9. The fees are 5K ($30), 10K (40) and HM ($50), and the prices increase by $5 through Aug. 13.

Hawaii Island Hoops camp
Registration is ongoing for the Hawaii Island Hoops college prep camp, which will be held from noon to 6 p.m. July 31-Aug. 3 at Hawaii Prep Academy.
According to a release, coaches from the NCAA, NAIA and junior college levels will be among the instructors.
The fee is $250 and includes a Nike reversible jersey and camp luau.

Hoops training in Kailua-Kona
Club Pa’akai advance basketball training is set for 9 a.m. July 14 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona.
This is a free year-round program for boys and girls ages 10-17 that is open to experienced players only
According to a release, training in Kohala, Honokaa and Hilo is coming soon.
UH-Hilo hoops camp July 23-26
Registration forms are now available for the 2018 Vulcan Basketball Camp with coach Jimmy Yagi and Vulcan coaches GE Coleman and David Kaneshiro, held July 23-26 at the UHH gym and Panaewa gym.
The camp, a Hilo tradition for more than 40 years, is open to boys and girls basketball players ages 9-17. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. each day (depending on age group). Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt, a basketball, a team photo, and lunch each day.

Vul volleyball camps in July
Registration is now open for two UH-Hilo volleyball camps this summer, one at UHH and another in Waimea.
Vul coach Gene Krieger will host a camp in Waimea, July 23-25 at the Waimea District Park Gymnasium. The three-day sessions are open to players ages 7-17 for a total cost of $75. The teaching will run from 9 a.m. to nooneach day with a break for lunch (bring your own), followed by afternoon play from 1-4 p.m.
The camps on campus will run in two different segments. The first, July 29-31, will be for high school players. Another three-day camp will run Aug. 1-3 for elementary and junior high school keiki. Both camps will run with the same 9 a.m. to noon, 1-4 p.m. schedule. The cost is $75.
Teaching includes 18 hours of instruction and play and a camp t-shirt. An additional option for overnight stay is available as well. For a total cost of $175, campers can stay two nights in the UHH dorms (shared room), which includes three lunches and two dinners.
