Twelve participants recently completed a basic shotgun shooting class offered through the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation program.
The two-day course was conducted at the Waiakea Recreation Center and the Hilo Trap and Skeet Range. The course combines hands-on classroom instruction and supervised live-fire training, and is focused on safe and responsible firearms handling and development of skills necessary to hit a moving target.
Target shooting is one of the fastest-growing participation sport activities in America.
The popular firearms training program is a collaborative effort of county Parks and Recreation and the nonprofit On Target Inc.
The June 25 class graduation was the 13th held since the program was initiated in 2014. Students ranged in age from 10-67. Two-thirds of the class was composed of parent/child relationships. Everyone contributed to a memorable and enjoyable learning experience.
The next basic shotgun shooting course is scheduled for Sept. 8 and 15.
For registration information, contact the Waiakea Recreation Center at 961-8733 from 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday or noon-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
