The Big Island Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominees for its 2018 class, which will have an increased pool of candidates.

“This year, the board of directors amended the qualification guidelines to include applicants who have gained sufficient local, area, state, national and international recognition and achievement in the amateur and professional ranks,” BISHOF president Jerry Chang said in a release.

The hall’s last class, a foursome, was inducted in 2015.

All nominees must be at least 35 years of age on or before Dec. 31, and all applications must be received no later than Sept. 28 to be considered.

Formed in the early 90’s by the late Jack Matsui, the nonprofit sports hall was established to honor the athletic achievements and contributions that have positively impacted the participants and sport for which they were nominated, and to promote and support athletics and sporting events on Hawaii Island, according to release.

“It’s important that we recognize Hawaii Island athletes that have represented our island and state with honor, dignity and pride,” Chang said.

Applications can be picked up and dropped off or mailed to Ellsworth Custom Cycles, 969 Kinoole St., or call 935-5519 to request an application, which can also be downloaded at www.bishof.org.

Recipients will be inducted Nov. 4 with the unveiling of their photo on the BISHOF wall in the Prince Kuhio Plaza.

An awards luncheon will follow at noon at Nani Mau Gardens.
