The warden and supervisor at Kulani Correctional Facility on the Big Island are being charged with theft by the state attorney general’s office.

Warden Wanda Craig is charged with fourth-degree theft. According to the complaint, sometime between Feb. 15 and June 13, Craig stole a nene crossing sign worth less than $250.

Supervisor Jerry Crivello is charged with third-degree theft for allegedly stealing gates worth more than $250.

“Both employees are on leave with pay, pending the outcomes of the administrative investigations as well as these petty misdemeanor charges,” said Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz. “We are unable to comment further during the ongoing investigation, mindful that the individuals are presumed innocent until adjudicated otherwise.”

Both have dates in Hilo District Court at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 28.

Third-degree theft is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Fourth-degree theft is a petty misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
