Yanagi goes 3-1 in match play on Maui
Kamehameha’s Pono Yanagi and Dillon Ah Chong both shrugged off first-round losses at the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association match play championship last weekend to reach the consolation final, where Yanagi prevailed 2 and 1 on Maui for his third consecutive victory.
Yanagi took out Waiakea’s Aidan Oki 4 and 2 in the consolation semis.
Waiakea’s Isaiah Kanno and Kailey Oki were the only Big Island golfers to reach the quarterfinals.
Kanno, the fifth seed, bested Oki but then lost 1 up to Honolulu’s Jonathan Morikawa, who was seeded fourth.
In the girls bracket, the 11th-seeded Kailey Oki upset Oahu’s Kaylee Akagi 8 and 6 before running into Oahu’s Myah McDonald, who won 3 and 1 en route to claiming the championship as the third seed.
Ah Chong pocketed a pair of 4-and-3 wins in consolation play and finished 2-2.
Honolulu’s Peter Jung, seeded third, won the title.
Andrews athletics registration
Andrews Athletic Association is opening registration for players ages 7-8, who are interested in playing baseball in the coach-pitch and Pinto division level.

Hawaii Alumni hoops tourney
The 10th annual Hawaii Alumni Basketball Tournament is looking for a few more teams to join this year’s event, set for Sept. 1-3 at Panaewa Park.
There will be an open and 35-and-over division, and number of Big Island schools and a few from Oahu are expected to attend.
Tournament organizers will award three Larry Manliguis Scholarships of $300 each, two of which are donated by the Hilo High class of 1960, and the other donated by the tournament proceeds.

Ka’u Coffee Trail Run
The fifth annual Ka’u Coffee Trail Run will be held Sept. 22 offering 5K, 10K and half-marathon races through macadamia nut and coffee fields along the slopes of rural Ka’u.
The runs are sponsored by O Ka’u Kakou, and all profits benefit the community, a release said. The races begin and end at the Ka’u Coffee Mill in Pahala.
Early registration runs through Monday. The fees are 5K ($30), 10K (40) and HM ($50), and the prices increase by $5 through Aug. 13.

Hashimoto records first ace
Russell Hashimoto recorded his first hole-in-one on Monday,Aug. 13 at the par 3 177-yard 13th hole at Hilo Municipal Golf Course with a fairway wood.
Steve Ozaki and Randy Kishimoto witnessed Hashimoto’s first ace.
