Kahuku Unit closed because of Hurricane Lane

The Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was closed today and will remain closed Thursday because of Hurricane Lane. All programs are canceled.

The community talk-story event about the future of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park scheduled for Thursday at Kahuku was rescheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 30.

Park staff was busy readying for the storm Wednesday by stowing loose items and preparing chainsaws and other tools to respond to any damage, including fallen trees blocking roadways.

Most of the park has been closed to the public since May 11 because of hazardous volcanic and seismic activity. A partial re-opening date is set for Sept. 22, National Public Lands Day, since the lull in activity began earlier this month.

Check the park website at www.nps.gov/hawaiivolcanoes and follow the park’s official social media channels for updates.

Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historic Site closed until further notice

To ensure visitor safety, Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historic Site will be closed until further notice in anticipation of heavy winds and rain.

The entrance gates will be locked and park trails also will be closed. Park managers will assess conditions Saturday morning and reopen the park for regular operations once it is safe to do so.

For the latest closure information, park visitors can check the park Facebook or Instagram pages.
