Junior golfers tee off at classic

Second-place was the name of the game for local golfers at the Big Island Junior Classic.

Waikoloa’s Ethan Jaehn, and Hilo’s Pono Yanagi, Lacey Uchida and Jake Otani each finished runner-up Monday at Hualalai Golf Course.

Jaehn (72-74) finished 2-over and tied atop the boys 13-14 flight with Oahu’s Joshua Hayashida, who was the scorecard playoff winner. Hilo’s Dysen Park was third at 3-over.

At even-par in boys 15-18, Yanagi (74-70) finished three shots behind Honolulu’s Davis Lee.

In the oldest girls division, Uchida (76-75) was four strokes off the pace set by Oahu’s Kaylee Akagi.

In boys 7-10, Honolulu’s Jordan Takai prevailed at 9-over, with Otani (80-80) seven stokes back.

Hilo’s Noah Otani was third in 11-12, and Hilo’s Elle Otani took third in girls 13-14, one shot ahead of Hilo’s Kailey Oki.

UHH freshmen lead the way

At the Big Wave Invitational on Saturday on Oahu, three freshmen placed in the top 16 as UH-Hilo finished fifth of six teams.

Olivia Jarvis led the way in 12th place, traversing the 5K course in 20 minutes, 24 seconds, while Annaka Barragan came in two spots later in 20:30. Makena Morris’s effort of 20:53 was 16th.

Battle of the Bay

The ninth annual Battle of the Bay jiujitsu tournament is scheduled for Sept. 15 at Hilo Armory.
