Halloween season is fast approaching and who better to get you in the spirit than the creepy, kooky, altogether ooky Addams Family live on stage?
You know them, and chances are you’ll know the Kona performers playing these legendary roles when the Aloha Theatre brings them to life — and death in its production of “The Addams Family: A New Musical.”
The hilarious, macabre Addams clan is led by Victor Lugo as Gomez and Jaquelynn Collier as Morticia. Playing other classic family members are Cambrey White as Wednesday, Maka Cabatbat as Pugsley, Miguel Montez as Uncle Fester, Kelly Spangler as Lurch and Karen Hollinger as Grandma.
The family is joined in the musical by the Beineke family. Lucas is Wednesday’s new boyfriend, played by Stephen Alves, and his parents, Alice and Mal, are played by Nikki Johnson and Joel Michaelson. Their visit to Casa de Addams sets the show’s plot spinning.
“There’s no shortage of spookiness, faded charm and just plain silliness in this show,” said director Jerry Tracy. “But there are also moving and meaningful moments which all families will identify with. Misunderstandings abound as the two families are thrust together. One of the show’s themes is understanding and appreciating the differences in others, and that seems quite timely for our island and our country.”
The Ancestors, a motley crew of singing, dancing ghosts from the Addams family crypt, are played by Peggy Andersen, Ariel Cohen, Fletcher Johnson, Kent Kane, Kira Kane, Raise Klyne, Nathan Lublin, Brett McCardle and Riley Newton.
Other production crew members include Peter Schonberg, producer; Tiffany Kutsunai, staff producer; Rich Bickel, technical director; Robin O’Hara, assistant director; Bernaldo Evangelista, music director; Marinella Savarese, vocal director; Rexanne Ring, choreographer; Gerald Lucena, set designer; Kaitlin Moore, costume designer; Lisa Week; props designer; Jeff Rowand, sound designer; Cameron Miculka, lighting designer; Catherine Williams, hair and makeup designer; Nicole Aragon, stage manager; and Ikaika Bredeson, stage crew.
Other crew members include Yasir Bey, Reggie Koffman, Jen Ancheta and Gwen Protea.
“The Addams Family: A New Musical” is appropriate for all ages, and is based on characters created by The New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams. Music and lyrics are by Andrew Lippa, with book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.
Its Big Island premiere will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 12-28.
