The skinny: For the second time in four matches, Hawaii squandered a huge lead in failing to close out a set after being poised to take Set 3 against Pepperdine, ahead 22-17. Five aces from Heidi Dyer helped the Waves go on an 8-0 roll.
The nonconference defeat may have popped Hawaii’s on-the-bubble NCAA tournament bid hopes. The Wahine finish the Big West season at home next week with matches against UC Irvine on Thursday and UC Davis on Friday, victories that would have them finish second for a second consecutive season.
It still might not be enough to extend the season.
“We can’t think about that,” Hawaii coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos said in a postmatch phone call. “Whatever happens, happens. It’s what they (the NCAA selection committee) decide. We’ll just keep playing and play hard, have pride.
“Tonight … that’s been our year. Up, down, up, down. That’s my team. We don’t give up, but if they follow the game plan from the beginning, do their jobs from the beginning, we’re not playing catch-up.”

The skinny: A storybook start to the season was within reach for Hawaii. Instead, Pepperdine stole the copyright in the final seconds with a tough 3-pointer at the Stan Sheriff Center
Kenna Woodfolk’s free throws made it 64-62 UH with a minute and change left. But she missed a layup the next trip down for a chance to build the lead.
After a timeout, Paige Fecske (game-high 22 points) went baseline and around a screen and hit a difficult curling 3 for a 65-64 lead with 10 seconds left. .
UH called timeout and advanced the ball with 9.8 seconds left. Savannah Reier was short on a leaning mid-range jumper with a few seconds left and the Wahine couldn’t get the rebound. UH committed 21 turnovers.
Woodfolk, a junior forward, led UH with 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting and junior guard Courtney Middap had a career-high 14. Point guard Tia Kanoa had 11 on 4-for-5 shooting.
Quotable: “Tonight didn’t come down to the final play,” coach Laura Beeman said. “We gave up too many offensive rebounds and had too many turºnovers. Even though we had those mistakes, we are in a really good position. This team is filled with fighters; we are going to be fine.”
