Rep. Mark Nakashima has been named vice speaker of the state House of Representatives.

Nakashima, a Democrat, represents District 1, covering Hamakua and portions of Hilo.

Other Hawaii Island representatives named to leadership positions are:

• Rep. Nicole Lowen, majority whip and Energy & Environmental Protection Committee chairwoman;

• Rep. Richard Creagan, Agriculture Committee chairman;

• Rep. Joy San Buenaventura, majority whip and Human Services & Homelessness Committee chairwoman;

• Rep. Richard Onishi, Tourism & International Affairs Committee chairman.
