Sakada Day commemorates the first 15 sakadas, or Filipino plantation contract laborers, to arrive in Honolulu in 1906. A total of 126,000 Filipino workers worked in Hawaii’s sugarcane plantations. “Connecting Our Past to Shape the Future” is this year’s theme. During the event, sakadas will be honored and recognized with traditional songs, dances, food, certificates and congratulatory messages. Details: Papa ‘Olelo Hawai‘i Part One, beginning Hawaiian language courses taught by University of Hawaii at Hilo instructor ‘Alika Guerrero, will be offered for eight weeks. This basics class will focus on simple vocabulary, conversation, grammar and sentence structure. Cost is $90 or $80 for VAC members. Details: This drop-in style class will allow island residents and visitors the opportunity to try their hand at creating with clay on the potter’s wheel, without having to commit to an eight- or 10-week series. Emphasis will be placed on getting a feel for working on the potter’s wheel and experiencing the thrill of hand-forming a pot in motion. Students with all levels of clay experience welcome. Cost is $35 or $30 for VAC members.
