Hawaii County will be installing new gates at Lehia Beach Park at the end of Kalanianaole Avenue.
Some Department of Hawaiian Home Land beneficiaries, who have a right-of-entry permit on nearby DHHL land, said people had been driving into the area at night to do drugs because the gate couldn’t be closed. They set up a makeshift checkpoint over the weekend to help police the area.
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation responded by ordering new gates, including one that can be used by the beneficiaries at all hours to access the trust lands.
Maurice Messina, deputy Parks and Recreation director, said the county is responsible for 49 acres in the area, known by some as “Kings Landing.”
He said the new gates could take two weeks to install.
