The holiday season has begun with snow as a light snowfall has closed public access to Maunakea.
The Maunakea Access Road was closed to the public Monday morning following a snowfall on Maunakea summit. Employees at the Visitor Information Station reported that the snowfall was “not terribly deep” and no deeper than 1.5 inches.
According to a Mauna Kea Weather Center report, road crews are working to clear the roads of snow and ice.
No severe weather is currently predicted anywhere in the state, although a small craft advisory is in effect off the southern and western coasts of the Big Island.
