Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens and Paradise Helicopters announced that “Morning Moon,” an image taken by photographer Jay Takaaze, has been selected to be the cover photo for the 2019 Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens photography contest calendar.
Takaaze has been a professional photographer for more than 40 years.
The grand prize winner’s award of a helicopter tour on Paradise Helicopters with Bruce Omori and Mick Kalber will be presented during the third annual Banyan Drive Art Stroll Saturday, Jan. 12.
An exhibit of works featured in the 2019 calendar will be held in Hilo Bay Café from noon until 5 p.m. during the Banyan Drive Art Stroll.
“Paradise Helicopters is honored to support Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens who have dedicated so much effort to fostering Lili‘uokalani Gardens,” said Cal Dorn, president of Paradise Helicopters.
“Our employees, many of whom were born and live in Hilo, use and appreciate Lili‘uokalani Gardens. Congratulations to Jay Takaaze on his winning photograph.”
Copies of the 2019 calendar were printed at Hawaii Printing Corporation and are for sale at Banyan Gallery, near the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, at Basically Books on Kamehameha Avenue and online from Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens.
The group also will have a booth today at the Na Makua Christmas Gift Fair in the Afook Chinen Civic Center.
The 2019 photography contest was chaired by Vijay Karai, who remarked: “I had the pleasure of curating the Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens second annual calendar. Again, what I see in these images is limitless talent and artistic expression. Mary Goodrich did an excellent job at selecting a collection of images suitable to the calendar needs. Thank you to photographers for contributing your talent.”
The calendar was designed by Ken Goodrich of Hawaii Photo Retreat. Other photographers selected for featured images for each month include: Jared Goodwin, Anna Luna, Gary Bartolome, K.T. Cannon-Eger, Rita French, Lehuanani Waipa Ah Nee, Mary Konczyk, and Kenji Kuroshima.
Photographers whose images appear as thumbnail size are Rita French, Kenji Kuroshima, K.T. Cannon-Eger, Lee Schechtman, Rhonda Zigmantas, Sam Hui, Gary Bartolome, Daghild Rick, Valerie A. Victorine, Mary Konczyk, Chris Butcher, Eileen Tredway and Lehuanani Waipa Ah Nee.
