Details: The exotic sound of Javanese gamelan (an orchestra of bronze gongs and metallophones) has been described as “moonlight and flowing water.” Whether you are already an accomplished musician, or just someone who wanted to learn to play an instrument but never got around to it, you might enjoy learning gamelan. A WALK INTO THE PAST WITH THOMAS A. JAGGAR
Where: Kilauea Visitor Center, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Details: Walk back to 1912 and meet the founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Thomas A. Jaggar, at the edge of Kilauea volcano. Dressed in period costume, Ka‘u actor-director Dick Hershberger brings the renowned geologist to life. Jaggar will take participants on a tour of his tiny lab located below the Volcano House to see original seismograph equipment and other early instruments. Learn what motivated Jaggar to dedicate his life to the study of Hawaiian volcanoes and how his work helps save lives today. Sakada Day commemorates the first 15 sakadas, or Filipino plantation contract laborers, to arrive in Honolulu in 1906. A total of 126,000 Filipino workers worked in Hawaii’s sugarcane plantations. “Connecting Our Past to Shape the Future” is this year’s theme.
