Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is reversing its decision to charge park entrance fees to users of the Kilauea Military Camp.
The change follows a Tribune-Herald article on the issue published Sunday.
“We’ve heard the concerns from local veterans and on further review, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will revert to its previous practice of allowing veterans who want access to Kilauea Military Camp to enter the park without paying park entrance fees,” park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said in an email. “We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience caused by our recent change in policy.”
Previously, Ferracane said the park began charging entrance fees to KMC users last January.
The park justified charging KMC users since it didn’t think fee waivers can be given for recreational purposes.
KMC is a military recreation facility located on the rim of Kilauea caldera. Users have to enter the park in order to access the facilities.
