A rematch of the 2018 BIIF Division I boys soccer championship proved at least two things.
First, Hawaii Prep is still a machine.
Second, there is a lot to learn from said machine.
Jake Schneider scored four goals Monday in Waimea as HPA had a much easier time with Waiakea than the last time these two teams met, rolling to a 6-1 victory.
Schneider, the reigning BIIF D-I player of the year, already has 17 goals on the season for Ka Makani (6-0), which ripped through the first half of its four home-and-aways against D-I teams, beating the Warriors, Hilo, Kealakehe and Keaau by a combined 22-2.
The co-state champions are trying to complete a third consecutive unbeaten league season, and Waiakea coach David Urakami usually look forwards to playing them.
Monday was no different
“HPA is a great team to experiment different formations and tactics with,” Urakami said. “Being that they are top five in the state and they are on our island is rare, and we needed to take advantage of that opportunity.”
John Grover netted his third goal for the Warriors (2-1-1), who took HPA to overtime in last season’s BIIF final before Ka Makani got a goal from Toby Balaam to win the title.
Tage Boyette scored a goal Monday for Ka Makani, who also took advantage of an own goal.
Girls
Bella Police scored in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, and HPA downed Waiakea 1-0.
“I was happy how we competed,” Ka Makani coach Stephen Perry said. “Waiakea was strong on the ball and we had to keep our shape.”
“Kahele Walsh and Ruby Helmuth worked well in the back keeping our back line in position and starting our possession.”
Maia Mills collected the shutout for HPA (4-1-1).
The Warriors fell to 2-3. Coach Erick Lemus said he liked his team’s effort, though he wished Waiakea would have gotten more from its opportunities.
Saturday
Jonathan DeMotta and Logan Waltjen each recorded hat tricks as Kamehameha beat Keaau 8-0 at Paiea Stadium.
Buddy Betts added a goal and four assists, Chris Knell scored and drew two assists for the Warriors and Christian Hironaga collected the shutout against the Cougars (0-5).
Also garnering assists for Kamehameha (5-1) were Waltjen and Kanaka Kuamoo-Quihano.
Kealakehe 6, Kohala 0: The Waveriders (2-1) won on the road, dropping the Cowboys to 2-2.
One of the highlights thus far for Kohala was a 1-0 win at Konawaena on Dec. 12. The goal, according to coach Daniel Perez, came on a three-man attack started by Shiloh Perez and ended with Julian Parks making the assisting pass to a streaking Alika Viernes on far post. Kamani Provencal was credited with the shutout.
Earlier, Perez collected two goals and two assists and Parks scored twice in a 6-0 win at Ka’u. Zion Paio-Bratt also netted a goal to back Provencal’s shutout.
Girls
Kaila Ambrosio and Roycie Faye each scored twice to power Kamehameha to a 7-0 win against Keaau.
Raeshalyn Respicio, Jaden Dinkel and Tabitha Pacheco also scored for the Warriors (5-0) and Kaylia Galindo and Nyka-Rae Laeda each had a hand in the shutout of the Cougars (0-6).
