After the holidays, instead of throwing away their holiday trees, residents are encouraged to “tree-cycle.”

Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 15, residents can dispose of organic holiday trees at designated tree recycling areas at county recycling and transfer Stations in Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa, Volcano, Kealakehe and Waimea. Those transfer stations also will accept kadomatsu decorations.

Residents are advised to remove all decorations from their trees before recycling them and to only deposit the trees in the designated areas, not the general rubbish chutes.
