On its way to a midweek showdown with Waiakea, Hawaii Prep tested the Division I waters against Keaau.

Valentinas Ulinas led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points Monday night, and Ka Makani charged past the Cougars 66-56 in BIIF boys basketball.

Javan Perez added 12 points and Matija Vitorovic chipped in 11 for HPA (8-0), which was playing its second D-I team this season. Ka Makani seized control early, leading by eight points after one quarter and 36-22 at halftime, as it gets set to face fellow unbeaten Waiakea at the Warriors’ gym Wednesday night.

Patrick Mears scored 15 points for the Cougars (5-4), who had won four of five, falling into fourth place in D-I, a half-game behind Konawaena. Keaau, which also got 10 points from Stanley Namnama, plays at the Wildcats on Wednesday.

Hilo 70, Ka’u 46: Kaukahi Alameda was one of three Vikings to score in double figures with 18 points and host Hilo started to pull away with a 24-point fourth quarter.

Rayson Padilla added 11 points and Mason Galima scored 10 for the Vikings (6-2), who turned a one-point first-quarter lead into a 38-23 advantage at the break.

Andre Carvalho led the Trojans with 12 points and Shesley Martinez had 11. Ka’u worked hard in the third quarter to whittle its deficit to 12, but Hilo scored 21 points in the fourth.

Kamehameha 61, Honokaa 52: The Warriors (3-5) ended their slump with a road win that resuscitated their D-I playoff hopes.

The Dragons (3-4) fell below .500 but remain in good standing in the D-II playoff picture.

Kohala 55, Parker 42: The Cowboys went up to Waimea to improve to 7-1.

The Bulls (2-6) have lost three in a row.
