Pops Toughman kickboxing tourney
The inaugural “Pops” Toughman Hawaii Memorial Tournament will be held Feb. 23 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and feature some of Hawaii’s top fighters.
The kickboxing event will honor Walter “Pops” Carvalho Sr., who died March 23, 2017 and trained Hawaii fighters for decades.
Dylan Rush will return to defend his super heavyweight title, one of three championship bouts. There will also be a welterweight tournament.
Ben Santiago and “Untamable” Jon Barnard will be on the card, which includes Savon Barnard in his junior division Toughman Hawaii debut.
Other fighters include Joey Aquino, Kyle Prado, Damien Mercado, Rob Nii, Itoshi Kawakami, Saloman Lord, Shannon Pua, Josh Dolman, Keith Aguiar, Daniel Terry, Thor Soder, Billy Jacobs, Ikaika Rodrigues, and Nephi Lancaster.

UHH tennis falls to Linfield
Linfield (Ore.) College defeated the UH-Hilo women’s tennis team 4-3 on Tuesday at the UHH courts.
In singles play, UHH’s Anouk van Hoek def. Michelle Uyeda, who won the ITA West Region title as a freshman, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; UHH’s Marina Colvee def. Tessa Kenn, 6-2, 6-0; LC’s Elsa Harris def. Carmelle Joyner, 6-3, 7-5; LC’s Riley Clayeux def. Sandra Dafincescu, 6-0, 6-2; LC’s Alysse Nakasato def. Hina Nishida, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4; LC’s Haley Fujimori def. Gabriela Aguilar Lawlor, 6-1, 6-4.
