Kekoa Ogawa threw 4 2/3 innings of hitless ball, and Hilo capitalized on six errors to run past Hawaii Prep 11-1 in a BIIF baseball game Monday at Wong Stadium.
Outside of a shaky first inning, Ogawa was brilliant in a six-inning TKO game. He walked one and hit three and struck out eight and also left the bases loaded in the first inning, where the Hilo sophomore did his best work.
After a walk and a hit batter, Ogata recorded a strikeout and hit another batter to fill the bases. He induced a groundout where third baseman Ocean Gabonia threw home to catcher Ryan Cabreira for the second out.
“I thought I did good and threw strikes,” Ogawa said. “I threw strikes and relied on my defense. It felt good today.”
Ogawa got another strikeout to end the inning. From there, Ogawa cruised along. He retired 10 of 11.
The no-hitter was lost in the sixth when Ka Makani catcher Ikaika Apilado singled off Charles Barclay. Michael Hughes followed with a single, and the shutout was gone when a run scored on an error.
In the sixth, Dayson Valentin and Logan Wilson walked off Ka Makani reliever Tayson Hirayama. Kaimana Kuamoo followed with a sacrifice fly, and the game-winner scored on a wild pitch.
Nate Heymann started, pitched 3 2/3 innings and took a no-decision. He gave up nine runs but only four were earned.
It was a rough day for HPA’s defense, which committed two errors in the first and three in the third.
In the first inning, Ocean Gabonia clobbered a two-run double and later scored on an error.
Hilo added a run in the second when Titus Sato struck out and reached on a wild pitch and later scored on Cabreira’s RBI single.
In the third, HPA committed three errors, which led to three runs. Dayson Moses had an RBI single in the inning.
Braeden Samura pitched a scoreless inning for HPA.
By the third inning, Hilo coach Baba Lancaster started to empty his bench.
“Everybody played and contributed,” he said. “It was a good team win. From the second inning, Kekoa had command and threw a good game.”
Softball
Kamehameha 21, Ka’u 0: Dioni Lincoln batted 4 for 4 and had five RBIs with a two-run homer in Pahala, Kawehi Ili added two hits and two RBIs, Kuulei Ili had three hits and two RBIs and Brooke Baptiste picked up the win and had two hits and three RBIs.
Leiloa Bustamante had two hits and three RBIs, Jolie Kim had two hits, Kawai Kauahi-Raquel and Kealoha Grace each had two hits and two RBIs.
Baptiste pitched three innings for the TKO win. She allowed two hits and a walk and struck out three.
