During the week of March 25-April 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, four; Puna, three; Hamakua, North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 305 DUI arrests compared to 286 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.6 percent.
There have been 246 major accidents so far this year compared to 336 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.8 percent.
To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities, compared to seven fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 28.6 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
