Police have identified a motorcyclist killed in a head-collision with a sport-utility vehicle April 20 in Kona as 60-year-old Michael J. Clair of Kailua-Kona.

According to police, Clair was riding north on a white 2013 BMW HP4 motorcycle heading north on Palani Road (Highway 190), crossed a double-solid yellow line near a turn and struck a southbound white 2019 Toyota Sequoia SUV head-on just below the intersection of Holualoa Road (Highway 180).

The driver of the SUV, a 23-year-old woman passenger and 2-year-old child were taken to Kona Community Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and later released.

Police believe speed and alcohol are factors.

Clair’s death is the 6th official traffic fatality this year compared to eight at this time last year.
