A 40-year-old man died Friday evening after becoming unresponsive while diving near Onekahakaha Beach Park.
The Hawaii Fire Department said the man, who was not identified, had difficulty breathing.
A friend assisted him to get to the shore but he went unresponsive in shallow waters, where fire department personnel found him shortly before 9 p.m.
The man was extricated and transported to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.
