COMIC JOURNALISM WITH JUNE’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Details: New York Times’ best-selling comic journalist, author and artist Andy Warner was selected as the park’s artist in residence for this month. During his residency, Warner plans to explore the human accommodation to life around volcanoes, and parlay personal stories of culture, science and tradition into a long-form nonfiction comic that explores the aftermath and recovery from the 2018 Kilauea eruption. Part of the ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free; park entrance fees apply.

BONSAI, IKEBANA AND SUISEKI EXHIBITION
Where: Wailoa Center, 200 Piopio St., Hilo
When: June 28-29
Details: Features bonsai from the Mokuhonua Bonsai Club and Hilo Bonsai Kyoshitsu bonsai, suiseki and ikebana display. A bonsai demonstration will be given at 2 p.m. June 28. An ikebana demo is planned for 10 a.m. June 29. The public also can bring their plants for analysis by bonsai club members. Limited plants will be available for hands-on experience in creating bonsai.

THE JAPANESE ART OF ORIGAMI

DRAWING MANDALAS AS MEDITATION

Details: Learn the creative and meditative process of drawing mandalas. “Mandala” is Sanskrit for “circle” and leaves the shape as the only guideline. Volcano artist Lisa Maria will guide and share her personal tips and tricks for drawing these mandalas, making this an easy, relaxing and fun morning. Participants will have the opportunity to create as many mandala drawings as they want. Cost is $35, or $30 VAC members, plus a $10 supply fee. All supplies will be provided. MINI TELESCOPE CONSTELLATION CRAFT

Details: The night sky is filled with stars that form pictures known as constellations. These pictures can be seen on clear cloudless nights in the night sky. Create your own constellation mini telescope tubes with yellow dots. Once dots are placed, simply connect them using white colored pencils to create mythical pictures in the night sky. Participants complete their telescope with stickers.

Details: When Kilauea volcano erupted last year, the number of lost or abandoned pets jumped by 30 percent. Rainbow Friends still has 37 pets left from the more than 100 it took in after the lava began its destructive path. With the community’s support, the sanctuary can truly bring compassionate care to a new level, helping bring joy back to the eyes of many more of our four-legged friends.
