KAILUA-KONA — Hilo started strong and finished stronger against North Hawaii on Saturday afternoon, notching a 14-4 TKO victory to punch its ticket to the Little League district title game for ages 8-10.
Hilo blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring nine runs to secure the victory. Kahiau Kalaniopio delivered the clinching hit, knocking in Kaheno Kuamoo and the speedy Josiah Nihoa who was able to score from second base.
On the mound, it was Skyler Young-Curlee picking up the victory for the east-side squad.
Despite the loss, North Hawaii got solid performances at the dish from Zachary Montgomery and Jay Salazar. Montgomery tallied a pair of hits, while Salazar had three.
Hilo will face West Side in the championship game Saturday at Old Kona Airport Park. West Side won the first matchup in a thriller on Friday, 6-4.
The tournament is a double-elimination format, so Hilo will have to win two games against West Side to be crowned champions. The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. and the second contest will follow if necessary.
