During the week of July 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; South Hilo, six; Puna, three; Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.
There were arrests for other charges stemming from the 18 DUI arrests. They include four for driving after license suspended, two for driving without a license, nine for driving without insurance, one for methamphetamine possession and six for other moving or regulatory violations.
So far this year, there have been 604 DUI arrests compared to 626 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.5 percent.
There have been 497 major accidents so far this year compared to 685 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.4 percent.
To date, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities compared to 16 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 12.5 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
