Hilo minor leaguer Joey Jarneski is on the move, but he’s not moving that far.
The White Sox traded reliever Nate Jones to the Rangers ahead of Wednesday’s major league trade deadline for Jarneski and another minor league pitcher, Ray Castro.
Jarneski, 19, has appeared in 10 games with the Arizona Rookie League Rangers, going 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.
Jarneski, a 2017 Hilo High grad, missed the 2018 season while recovering from right elbow surgery in September 2017. He made eight appearances in 2017 after being selected in the 12th round of the 2017 draft.
He was assigned to the Arizona Rookie League White Sox.
The Rangers also received international signing bonus pool money and cash considerations.
It turned out to be the only move the White Sox made. Speculation centered on closer Alex Colome, who reportedly receiving interest from other clubs. But Colome is still under club control for one more season, and the Sox decided to hold on to the reliable reliever. Colome has 21 saves in 22 chances.
Leury Garcia, a versatile infielder/outfielder, and veteran Jon Jay were also among the players seen as potential trade options. First baseman Jose Abreu and reliever Aaron Bummer were seen as more of a long shot.
Jones is on the 60-day injured list after surgery on his right forearm. He appeared in 13 games this season, going 0-1 with a 3.48 ERA, one save and 10 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.
Jones, 33, went 22-13 with a 3.48 ERA, nine saves, 69 holds and 318 strikeouts in 284 relief appearances during eight seasons (2012-19) with the Sox.
Castro, 22, is 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings during nine appearances (seven starts) with the Dominican Summer League Rangers.
Castro, who is from San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, made 13 combined appearances between the DSL Rangers and AZL Rangers in 2018. He went 7-6 with a 2.83 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 31 career games (15 starts) in the Texas system.
He originally was signed as an international free agent on April 6, 2016.
