After Rock Steady Boxing debuted in October 2018 in Hilo, the devoted boxers have proven to themselves and their families that this program really works in fighting the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Cake and snacks will be served at 9:30 a.m. following the Oct. 11 Rock Steady Boxing session to celebrate the group’s one-year anniversary.
All of the participants credit Rock Steady Boxing for their noticeable improvements in strength and agility. The class size increased to at least 15 or more participants per session.
The Rock Steady Boxing program gives a lot of encouragement and support to all of its participants. They know that they are not alone and are all on the same journey, struggling and doing whatever they can to prevent this incurable disease from taking over their lives. There are 825 Rock Steady Boxing affiliates in the United States and all over the world.
After a year of Rock Steady Boxing, the participants have gained a lot of confidence and renewed hope to keep fighting as hard as they can against Parkinson’s disease.
“We can really see how each participant has improved,” said June Kiyabu, the wife of a Hilo Rock Steady Boxing class participant. “We all (are) so grateful for reaching this one-year milestone. All the coaches worked very hard to patiently help each participant attain their full potential so they feel a great sense of satisfaction to see the progress in each person.
The Parkinson’s community is invited and encouraged to join the Hilo Rock Steady Boxing class. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. Mondays and Fridays at the Waiakea Recreation Center Boxing Gymnasium.
The suggested fee for class is $5, but people donate whatever they can to help with the expenses.
