The Indian Classical Music Circle of Hawaii will be presenting events on the Big Island with sarod master Partho Sarothy.

A lecture and demo is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo, with a concert, lecture and demo fundraiser with pupus scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Hi‘ilani EcoHouse in Honokaa.

Blessed with an exceptional artistic temperament, exacting technical precision and a rare aesthetic sensibility, Sarothy is considered one of the most engaging, intelligent and talented instrumentalists in contemporary Hindustani music. His music embodies the true heritage of Hindustani classical music. His virtuosity on the sarod makes his exploration of the raagas an exercise in harmony and tranquility.

Sarothy started his musical training under his father, the late Sudhamoy Chowdhury, who was a disciple of Pt. Radhika Mohan Moitra, the great sarod maestro.

Born in 1960, Partho is based in Kolkata, the cultural mecca of India. He has been performing for the last 40 years in India and all over the world as a soloist, and also with his great guru, Pt. Ravi Shankar, as an accompanist, including the Kremlin Hall in the USSR, Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and others.

There will also be a Music Circle community outreach program with Sarothy offering a class on Friday to guitar students at Hilo High School.
