Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will reopen another trail tomorrow after being closed for more than a year because of earthquake-related damage.
A 1.1-mile section of Byron Ledge and Devastation trails that connects to Kilauea Iki Trail will reopen Saturday after receiving extensive repairs and monitoring following the Kilauea eruption and summit activity in 2018, when more than 60,000 earthquakes shook the mountain within three months.
The trails will afford hikers views of the Pu‘u Pau‘i cindercone and three of the islands’ volcanoes .
The reopening will also include the parking lot at Devastation Trial, which the Park hopes will alleviate the often overcrowded parking at Kilauea Iki Overlook. Hikers who access Kilauea Iki Trail from the Devastation Trail parking lot will add 2.2 miles to the four-mile loop trail.
