KAILUA-KONA — A Kona grand jury has indicted a 57-year-old Kona man on five offenses in connection with an Oct. 10 standoff with police that lasted nearly six hours.
Richard Denis Gorloff was charged Wednesday via the indictment with three counts first-degree terroristic threatening and one count each second-degree terroristic threatening and violation of an order for protection.
A bench warrant has yet to be issued as Gorloff remains remanded to the Hawaii State Hospital after being ordered Oct. 23 to undergo a mental fitness evaluation by a District Court judge. The indictment now moves the case to Circuit Court for trial proceedings. Bail had been set at $14,000 in District Court.
An initial appearance date has yet to be set for Gorloff to appear in Circuit Court Judge Melvin H. Fujino’s courtroom at the Keahuolu Courthouse.
Gorloff was taken into custody Oct. 10 after a nearly six-hour standoff that ensued after police were sent to his Ahulani Street home after receiving a report from the man’s ex-wife that he’d threatened to kill her. Gorloff refused to exit his residence and reportedly told officers that if they came any closer, he would blow up the residence.
Neighboring homes were evacuated and the Hawaii Police Department’s Special Response and Crisis Negotiation teams were deployed. Gorloff surrendered without incident about six hours later and was taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment of an undisclosed condition.
He was charged Oct. 21, after his release from the hospital, with first-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree terroristic threatening and violating an order of protection in connection with the incident.
In a separate, unrelated case, Gorloff is being held on $1 million bail after Circuit Court Judge Robert D.S. Kim upped the bail amount from $20,000 following his October arrest. The case involves reckless endangering and firearms charges and dates to early July.
Gorloff was free on bail at the time of the alleged offenses on Oct. 10.
