During the week of Nov. 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Three were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Kona, 12.
• South Hilo, eight.
• South Kohala, three.
• Puna, one.
So far this year, there have been 963 DUI arrests compared to 961 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.21%.
There have been 852 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,029 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.2%.
To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 27 for the same time last year, a 22% decrease for official fatalities.
There have also been three road deaths police don’t count toward the official total:
• One because the driver was found to have died from a medical condition.
• Another because the driver was found to have died because of natural causes.
• And a third because the fatality occurred in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which isn’t in Hawaii Police Department jurisdiction.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
