Officers assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope protester blockade and encampment on Maunakea Access Road issued 336 traffic citations and arrested three suspects for three offenses in the week of Dec. 5-11, police said Friday.
The 336 citations were for: speeding, 184; excessive speeding, nine; seatbelt violations, 26; using a cellphone or electronic device while driving, four; excessive tinting on winshields and/or windows, eight; driving without a license, seven; driving without insurance, nine; unsafe vehicle, 13; other moving violations, eight; no license plates, nine; and regulatory violations, 59. No parking tickets were written, police said.
The offenses alleged for the three arrested individuals are: DUI, one; and contempt of court or failure to appear, two.
The 17-week-long Daniel K. Inouye Highway enhanced traffic enforcement by the Hawaii Police Department, which started on Aug. 15, has resulted in 8.013 citations issued and 74 people arrested for 135 offenses. Police say the stepped-up enforcement will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
