Police have arrested and charged two Honokaa women with drug and firearms offenses after officers allegedly smelled marijuana in a car at a DUI roadblock in Waimea.
Arrested and charged are 40-year-old Crystal Botelho and 44-year-old Nani Jo Keanini, both of Honokaa.
Police say that at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Botelho, who was driving, was stopped at a roadblock on Highway 19 near the Kamamalu Street intersection.
Police say the car, in which Keanini was a passenger, had an odor of marijuana emanating from within. Officers searched the vehicle and reportedly discovered a loaded .25 caliber handgun, a loaded .45 caliber handgun, 3.1 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 5.9 grams of suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $336.
Botelho was charged with with illegally carrying a pistol, carrying a loaded firearm on a public roadway, methamphetamine possession and drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $60,250.
Keanini was charged with illegally carrying a pistol, carrying a loaded firearm on a public roadway, prohibited possesion of a firearm, methamphetamine and marijuana possession, and drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $71,250.
Both remain in police custody at the Kealakehe police station pending their initial court appearance Monday in Kona District Court.
