Toribio Charles Banquil Sr., 85, of Pahoa died Dec. 11 at home. Born in Banna, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines, he was a member of the Pahoa Senior Citizens, served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and was a papaya farmer who received several awards for being the first farmer to successfully grow papaya in lava from the 1955 Puna eruption. Visitation 5-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at the Dodo Mortuary chapel. Celebration of life 6 p.m., followed by cremation. Casual attire. No flowers.
