Toribio Charles Banquil Sr., 85, of Pahoa died Dec. 11 at home. Born in Banna, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines, he was a member of the Pahoa Senior Citizens, served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and was a papaya farmer who received several awards for being the first farmer to successfully grow papaya in lava from the 1955 Puna eruption.
