It’s a very special Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. today at Church of the Holy Cross in Hilo.
During the “Service of Lessons and Carols,” a 32-voice choir composed of Christmas singers who joined the chancel choir, Na Leo Ni‘o Lani, will sing Gustav Holst’s “Christmas Day! A Choral Fantasy Of Old Carols.” They will be accompanied by an eight-piece string orchestra and piano.
The service will conclude in candlelight with the singing of “Silent Night.”
Also part of the program will be the choir from the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa of Hilo and members of the United Church of Christ of Pohnpei.
The church is decorated with Christmas wreaths and boughs and two Christmas trees. The paper-cut angels with trumpets are still flying and the Star of Bethlehem with 36 detailed cutouts is also on display.
The devotional, “An Advent of Giving, readings and reflections for Advent,” encourages readers to bring nonperishable food items for The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank.
