The ranking full-time National Guard member on Hawaii Island told about 100 people during a Veterans Day ceremony Monday in Hilo that leaders have an obligation to honor with dignity the legacies of those who served, both living and dead.

Will Republicans ever take a stand against Trump?

Republicans have engaged in some interesting contortions in conjuring a defense for President Donald Trump’s attempt to get Ukrainian officials to investigate the family of political rival Joe Biden. The most plausible approach is one Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey signed on to last month, saying he is keeping an open mind but that even if Trump asked Ukraine for a favor, the offense might not rise to a level that demands impeachment.

The impeachment stonewall

As the House’s impeachment inquiry enters a public phase this week, investigators have a problem. Potentially crucial witnesses, including acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security advisor John Bolton, have declined to testify. Mulvaney, who remains director of the Office of Management and Budget, failed to show up for a scheduled deposition Friday despite having been served with a subpoena.
