Kona man charged in standoff

KAILUA-KONA — A 57-year-old man is slated to make his initial court appearance today on charges stemming from a standoff with police earlier this month.

US may now keep some troops in Syria to guard oil fields

KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S. might leave some forces in Syria to secure oil fields and make sure they don’t fall into the hands of a resurgent Islamic State, said Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Monday, even though President Donald Trump insisted he is pulling troops out of the country and getting out of “endless wars.”

US takes step to require DNA samples from asylum-seekers

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is planning to collect DNA samples from asylum-seekers and other migrants detained by immigration officials and will add the information to a massive FBI database used by law enforcement hunting for criminals, a Justice Department official said.
