Born in Pepeekeo, she was a retired executive secretary for the former Carlsmith & Carlsmith, manager for the former Walli-Mae’s Slippers & Accessories, homemaker, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Aloha Choir. Visitation 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 24) at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral service at 10 a.m.. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park. Survived by daughters, Virginia (Franklin) Veriato of Hilo, Valerie (Henry Sr.) Pacheco of Wailuku, Maui, and Annette (Patrick Sr.) Aiona of Hilo; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Turkey wants Syrian forces to leave border areas, aide says

ISTANBUL — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants Syrian government forces to move out of areas near the Turkish border so he can resettle up to 2 million refugees there, his spokesman told The Associated Press on Saturday. The request will top Erdogan’s talks next week with Syria’s ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In late September, East Hawaii residents with ocean views might have noticed an unusual ship — too small for a cruise ship, too big for a fishing boat — sailing just offshore of the 2018 lava deltas along the Puna coast. Court upholds BLNR fines of unlicensed lava boats

Hilo Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura upheld administrative fines levied by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources totaling $48,500 against three illegal commercial lava boat tours on Hawaii Island in a ruling issued Sept. 27.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump punched back Friday at criticism that his Syria withdrawal is damaging U.S. credibility, betraying Kurdish allies and opening the door for a possible resurgence of the Islamic State. He touted a cease-fire agreement that seemed at risk as Turkey and Kurdish fighters differed over what it required and whether combat halted.
