New pot law goes into effect Jan. 11

Legislation passed by lawmakers earlier this year that decriminalizes the possession of three grams or less of marijuana and allows such past possessions to be expunged from criminal records will take effect early next year.

6 die in Las Vegas apartment building fire; 13 injured

LAS VEGAS — A fire in a three-story apartment building in downtown Las Vegas where residents were apparently using their stoves for heat killed six people and forced some residents to jump from upper-floor windows to escape the heavy smoke before dawn Saturday, authorities said.

Toribio Charles Banquil Sr., 85, of Pahoa died Dec. 11 at home. Born in Banna, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines, he was a member of the Pahoa Senior Citizens, served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and was a papaya farmer who received several awards for being the first farmer to successfully grow papaya in lava from the 1955 Puna eruption.
