Hilo High’s boys soccer team continues to enjoy the role of front-runner.
A good start and protecting a lead was just what the Vikings wanted Saturday against Kamehameha at Paiea Stadium. Urban Halpern, Masila Siva, Keanu Keolanui and Logan Mizuba each scored in the first half of Hilo’s 4-2 victory, its sixth in a row.
“(My) most favorite part of this win was the fact that we came out very intense and focused,” coach George Ichimaru said. “The ball moved in and out while moving up the field to create the scoring chances.”
With previous wins against Kealakehe and Waiakea, the Vikings (6-1-1) have done most of the heavy lifting required toward earning the top seed in the BIIF Division I playoffs, though a Tuesday test against Makua Lani awaits at Hilo Bayfront.
Ethan Shimabukuro and Kamanakai Paikuli scored for the Warriors (3-3-1), who trailed 4-1 at the break and remained in third place in Division II.
“We have still yet to fine-tune our attacking aspects of the game,” Ichimaru said. “I liked how the defense were exposed and was punished for our mistakes in the second half of the game. It’s helping our team really fine-tune our character and will on the field.”
Waiakea 13, Keaau 0: Elijah Carigon and Tevin Atwal each recorded hat tricks and Riley Tamanaha and Kyson Yamashiro scored two goals apiece to power the Warriors to a home victory.
John Grover, Kala’e Woods and Alon Halsted also found the back of next for Waiakea (5-1-1) and Jeremy Spain and Raiven Chinen shared in the shutout of the Cougars (0-6).
Konawaena 2, Kohala 1: Travis Ichishita and Joseph Roback scored in Kealakekua to lift the Wildcats to their second win of the season, dropping the Cowboys to 3-3.
Kealakehe 1, HPA 0: The Waveriders (5-2) won at home, handing Ka Makani their first loss.
Girls
Hilo 3, Kamehameha 3: The Vikings’ Briana Tanaka scored the tying goal, her second of the match, in the 69th minute as the teams played to a draw at Paiea Stadium.
Hilo’s Payton Saquid gave Hilo (4-4-1) a 2-1 lead with a goal just before halftime, but Chenoa Frederick struck quickly after the break, scoring in the 41st and 46th minutes to put the Warriors (2-2-3) in front.
Of the six goals in the match, five came in a 12-plus minute stretch in the middle of the match. Kamehameha’s Nanea Wong Yuen struck first, scoring in the 34th minute.
Waiakea 9, Keaau 0: Jacelyn Cambra scored four goals as the host Warriors remained unbeaten in their past five matches.
Emerson Aynessazian, Ella Johnson, Maiya Serrao, Kaela Hatakenaka and Maya Atwal each scored once for Waiakea (5-2-1) and Jayleen Andaya, Kelli Xie and Isis De Los Santos shared in the shutout of the Cougars (0-7).
Honokaa 9, Ka’u 0: Dallas Branco netted three goals and Zee Okamura Silva added two as the Dragons won on the road.
