INDIGO DYEING FUNDAMENTALS
Where: Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village

Details: Learn to dye natural fiber goods in a plant derived indigo vat. Create Shibori resist patterns using folding, wrapping, and clamping techniques, as well as how to control hue density with multiple dyeing submersions. Each participant will leave with their own finished sample pieces. Participants may bring 1-5 small items of your own to dye, avoiding bulky or heavy pieces. Items must be cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or anything natural. Please pre-wash items for best result. Class fee is $55/$50 for VAC members plus a $30 fee, inclusive of supplies. LIFE DRAWING WITH THE HILO ARTISTS HUI

Details: Open to all. Children younger than 18 years old must provide permission from a parent to attend. Cost is $10 per person. Arrive a few minutes early. Sessions feature drawing from a nude or partially draped model in a traditional format, starting with one minute gesture drawings and working up to 20 minute poses. Chairs are provided; however, participants must furnish their own drawing materials. Bring a drawing board or easel; 11-by-14-inch or larger pad of paper is recommended. All mediums are fine to use. If you wish to paint using traditional oils you must use a low odor, artist-grade solvent.

Details: Registration has begun for Hawaii Care Choices’ (formerly Hospice of Hilo) bereavement camp, Camp Ohana, taking place at Kilauea Military Camp. The overnight camp is an opportunity for families, adults and children, to participate in guided activities and fun exercises to help cope with the grief of losing loved ones. This camp helps to bridge the ways adults express grief with that of their children and helps everyone to move forward as a family. There is a $25 registration fee per family. Details: An international controversy is brewing over the proposed renaming of the Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park on Kauai to “Pa’ula’ula/Fort Elizabeth.” A book by UH-Hilo’s Dr. Peter Mills (Hawai’s Russian Adventure: A New Look at Old History, UH Press, c2002) clarifies that the fort was built by Hawaiians in 1816-1817 when King Kaumualii formed an alliance with Dr. George Anton Schaffer of the Russian-American Company. Dr. Mills explains the ongoing controversy that has prompted the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. and thousands of Russians and Russian-Americans to protest the renaming of this historic site.

LIFE DRAWING WITH HILO ARTIST HUI

Details: Open to all; participants younger than 18 must provide permission from a parent to attend. Cost is $10 per person. Sessions feature drawing from a nude or partially draped model in a traditional format, starting with one-minute gesture drawings and working up to 20-minute poses. Chairs are provided; however, participants must furnish their own drawing materials. Please bring your own drawing board or easel; an 11-by-14-inch or larger pad of paper is recommended.
