The Zonta Club of Hilo will present its biennial Rose Award of Excellence to Juliette “Julie” Tulang at a dinner in her honor on Monday, March 9, the day after International Women’s Day.
The event takes place at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center starting at 5:30 p.m. with no-host cocktails, followed by an Asian-fusion buffet dinner and an awards program.
“Julie has been one of the backbones of our club and our community organizations for decades,” said club president Elyse Robinson. “We are pleased to recognize this influential and inspirational woman for her superlative service.”
A member of Zonta Club of Hilo for more than 35 years, Tulang was recently elected to serve on the Zonta District 9 nominating committee. She has previously served as District 9 governor, lieutenant governor, area director, vice-area director and other posts.
Tulang organized the club’s Weinberg projects, which benefited local nonprofits with hundreds of volunteer hours and tens of thousands of dollars in cash.
“I believe in the mission of Zonta and the positive strides being made in communities locally and globally to advance the status of women,” Tulang said.
Tulang was raised on Kukaiau Ranch on the Hamakua Coast, is a graduate of Honokaa High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s of education degree from Linfield College in Oregon.
She is retired from the Hawaii County, where she served as deputy director and then director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Prior to serving at the “cabinet” level, Tulang coordinated the development of the Hawaii County Elderly Congregate Dining and Meals on Wheels Program.
After retiring from the county, Tulang worked for the Hawaii Community Foundation as a foundation associate, promoting philanthropy, charitable giving, and the importance of the nonprofit sector in the community.
Tulang is currently the chair of the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. board and has served on numerous others.
