During the week of Feb. 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, nine each; and Puna, four.
So far this year, there have been 147 DUI arrests compared to 144 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.1%.
There have been 131 major accidents so far this year compared to 119 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.1%.
To date, there have been four fatalities, compared to two fatalities for the same time last year. That represents a 100% increase in traffic fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
