MOKUHANGA: JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING WITH GLENN YAMANOHA

LIFE DRAWING WITH THE HILO ARTISTS HUI
Where: Kukuau Studio, 43-D Kukuau St., Hilo
When: 6 p.m. Tuesdays
Details: Open to all. Children younger than 18 years old must provide permission from a parent to attend. Cost is $15 per person. Arrive a few minutes early. Sessions feature drawing from a nude or partially draped model in a traditional format, starting with one minute gesture drawings and working up to 20 minute poses. Chairs are provided; however, participants must furnish their own drawing materials. Bring a drawing board or easel; 11-by-14-inch or larger pad of paper is recommended. All mediums are fine to use. If you wish to paint using traditional oils you must use a low odor, artist-grade solvent.

The VMC Club is modeled after the popular IMC Club concept, which provides organized “hangar flying” focused on building proficiency in instrument flying. The VMC Club will do the same, but for all pilots who are not instrument rated and fly primarily under visual flight rules and under VMC.

Details: Many cultures around the world have ancient languages written in pictures or symbols. Ogham is an ancient language also known as the ‘Celtic Tree Alphabet’ found in Ireland. Children celebrate the Emerald Isles (Ireland) by making their own Ogham. This simple craft uses craft sticks, pens, lined paper and a little imagination. Participants write their ABC’s on paper draw simple pictures or symbols for each letter. These are used to write short messages that can be decoded and shared.

“FROM PAHOA WITH LAVA”

Details: Presented by Laulima Pahoa, this six-month documentary is geared toward helping residents impacted by the latest lava flows in lower Puna. Informational signups and questions will be answered, and TV interviews and filming will be conducted. Second Saturdays of each month are for signups and questions for the following month.
