The County Department of Public Works has received $61 million in federal funds to repair lava-damaged roads in Puna.
The funds, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will be used in part to repair Highway 137, Pohoiki Road, Leilani Avenue, Hinalo Street, Lauone Street, Honaula Street and Lighthouse Road. The county and FEMA will work with the community to determine other roads that will be repaired as well.
“As we approach the two year anniversary of the 2018 Kilauea eruption, this federal funding will support ongoing recovery efforts on Hawaii Island,” said Sen. Mazie Hirono in a statement. “Even as we confront the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, I will continue to advocate for federal assistance that will help those impacted by the eruption work to rebuild their lives and communities.”
